The world has three interconnected problems:
Every year, thousands of students travel to Africa on ''service trips" that actually harm communities—displacing local workers, creating dependency, and reinforcing harmful stereotypes. Communities risk becoming props for college applications rather than partners in development.
Students spend years in classroom simulations and theoretical leadership programs, graduating without ever leading anything real. They can analyze case studies but can't navigate real-world complexity. They have credentials but lack confidence.
Talented Ghanaian youth have the intelligence and drive to transform their communities but lack opportunities. Meanwhile, privileged international students have opportunities but lack purpose and perspective. Both groups lose.
We founded Sage Experience to flip these broken paradigms.
Born in a remote Ghanaian fishing village, Charles was sent to the city before age six with his family's hope for education. He survived on the streets, sometimes going three days without food, but never missed school.
"I became the first in my family to graduate high school. But when my U.S. university visa was denied, I realized—if I cannot go to the world's classrooms, I will bring the world's students to my community."
Charles has spent 15+ years hosting international students, building our retreat center with his own hands, and creating opportunities for Ghanaian youth to learn alongside global peers.
Growing up in Washington DC’s suburbs, Ben discovered his purpose during a college trip to Ghana. He returned repeatedly after graduating from Dartmouth, and later pursued graduate degrees at MIT Sloan and Harvard Kennedy School.
"As Assistant Director of Admissions at Dartmouth, I saw thousands of students with perfect grades but no real experience. They could analyze poverty but had never talked to someone living it. I knew we needed something different."
Ben has dedicated his career to creating authentic educational experiences that develop real leaders while creating real impact.
When Charles and Ben met, they discovered a shared vision: What if we could create programs where Ghanaian and international students work as equals, solving real problems, developing real skills, creating real change?
In 2019, they founded Sage Experience.
Students and community members from Ghana comprise part of every team, bringing essential local knowledge while gaining international exposure and connections.
Students don't paint schools or teach English. They identify actual problems and implement sustainable solutions with measurable impact.
Our retreat center isn't separate from the community—it's part of it. Students engage authentically, not as tourists but as temporary residents.
Every project includes training for local maintenance and management. We stay involved year-round, ensuring continuity and growth.

Every voice matters equally. Ghanaian students aren't "helped"—they're partners. International students aren't "saviors"—they're learners.
We believe leadership cannot be taught in a classroom. It must be practiced, failed at, refined, and practiced again.
Every decision starts with one question: How does this benefit the local community long-term? If it doesn't, we don't do it.
